Enroll into the Doctoral School

The “competitive admission exam” is the main procedure for enrolling into the doctoral school in view of preparation of a thesis. This contest takes place every year in early July. Students must pre-register online in May by completing an application file, including the selection of two thesis topics from those proposed by the Doctoral School. At the end of the contest, the highest-ranked students benefit from a ministerial contract, the others can apply for thesis topics that received funding from other sources.

Registrations are closed. Only registered applicants can complete their PDF file online until May 30, 2023.

The registrations are open from Thursday, April 27, 2023, 2:00 pm till Sunday May 21, 2023, 11:59 pm.

Candidates must hold a Master's degree at the date of the oral admission exams.

Proposed thesis topics for the academic year 2023-2024

This list presents all the approved PhD topics after examination by the Doctoral School. As all forms of funding are not yet known at the time of posting this list, it will be updated as new information is received and decisions are taken. Some additional topics may be posted after administrative regularization.

Admission exam and program 2023

The competition of the Doctoral School takes place on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

Each application file is reviewed by the Council of the Doctoral School. After this examination, there are 2 possibilities :

1- candidates present the oral auditions to complete for a doctoral contract of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI)

2-Candidates find an agreement with a thesis director, whose topic is financed by other sources, to enroll in a doctorate

Potential research topics 2023

The principle : (Only candidates selected in the oral part of the competition are concerned)

In order to give equal opportunities to all candidates regardless of their university of origin, candidates will present a "fictitious" research project, independent of the real thesis subjects proposed by the Doctoral School. Each project is accompanied by bibliographical references to serve as a framework for the project.
The candidate is not asked to be a specialist in the proposed project, but, given his or her research training, to demonstrate his or her capacity for reflection and autonomy. The applicant will be asked to provide an introduction to the project, the methods to be used, the expected results and their relevance.The project should be achievable in 3 years. It should be neither an article analysis nor a literature review. Nor should it be a large laboratory project.
Each candidate can freely choose in the list of "fictitious" themes proposed the project he wishes to present, whatever the real thesis subject he is interested in.

Students are strongly advised to contact the thesis supervisors as soon as possible

Ministry Doctoral Scholarship

Candidates who wish to benefit from a doctoral scholarship from the Ministry will choose, according to their ranking, a thesis subject in agreement with a thesis supervisor.
Thesis supervisors must promptly inform the Doctoral School of their choice by e-mail, with a copy to the selected student.

The names of the beneficiaries of a doctoral scholarship from the Ministry must be communicated to the Graduate Research School, the thesis supervisors must send, by e-mail, to the Doctoral School ed-svs@u-bordeaux.fr, the names of the selected students no later than (OnThursday, July, 13, 2023) specifying obligatorily, the thesis starting date (September 1st or October 1st, 2023), the title of the subject (which must be identical to the one entered on ADUM) and the chosen doctoral specialty (the thesis supervisors have received the specialties proposed by the ED).
